Osteopathic manual treatment improves the condition of patients experiencing lower back pain significantly more than ultrasound therapy, according to a study conducted at the University of North Texas Health Science Center.
The study treated 455 adults with the two treatments during a span of 12 weeks. It found that “patients who received OMT, nearly two-thirds had a 30-percent reduction in their pain level, and half had a 50-percent reduction in their pain level.”
Not only did the patients treated with OMT see a reduction in pain, but they also were able to use less prescription pain medicine. This comes as numbers from the Institute of Medicine estimate the economic costs of chronic pain in America to be more than $550 billion annually.
