Fatal Traffic Accident Stops Lee Statue Removal, Again

This is never going to end.
|

The city was going to remove the Robert E. Lee statue from Lee Park Wednesday, pretty much immediately after the council voted to do so. But then, maybe not at the last minute but close, a temporary restraining order was granted. That ran out Thursday. After some logistics questions and so on, the plan was to take the statue down last night, during the Cowboys game — which is generally the best possible time to do anything controversial.

That idea was squelched when the crane hired to do the job, coming up from Houston, was hit by an 18-wheeler that blew through a light, apparently, a wreck that killed the semi driver and rendered the crane inoperable.

When will the statue be removed? City manager T.C. Broadnax isn’t saying, and, I mean, at this point, who would even count on anything until it’s actually done?
