If a bar is playing “Suspicious Minds,” I can’t walk out. Because I love it too much.

If you’ve lived in Dallas for a bit, you might already know that El Ranchito, the neighborhood restaurant in Oak Cliff that Nancy recommends for the cabrito and the kitsch, is home to one of the more intense Elvis impersonator contests in town. August is Elvis Month. The competition gets started tonight at 7:30 p.m., and there’s a $5 cover for your first look at the wannabe Kings after the $500 prize. Not bad for an evening’s entertainment. Call for a reservation if you want to make sure you have a seat.

Meanwhile, Wednesdays are good day to catch some theater because it doesn’t interfere with big group weekend plans, and if you’ve yet to see Fly at the Dallas Theater Center, you should. And not just because you can swing by Café des Artistes first for a $4 French 75, though those are high on my list. Fly is a reworked version of Peter Pan to put Wendy front and center. Check out our FrontRow review before you go.
