To market, to market.
To market, to market.

Trader Joe’s on Greenville opens today. Rejoice!

Friday

Alamo Drafthouse is officially open for your business. Get thee to the movies.

Meanwhile, everyone’s favorite 20-member band The Polyphonic Spree has a brand new album, and the release show tonight to prove it. Telegraph Canyon and Harper Simon open for Tim DeLaughter’s group. If you get the CD ticket package, you get a wristband that lets you in to Sundown’s rooftop after party.

If none of this strikes your fancy, allow Kathy Griffin to smash you over the head. She’s performing her stand up routine at the Verizon Theatre out in Grand Prairie.

Saturday

Two words. Dumpster. Pool. And it’s currently plopped outside the Dallas Contemporary as part of the Design District Market. Really, it’s an embarrassment of riches. You can shop at the indoor/outdoor market (air conditioning is courtesy of the market’s partnership with the Contemporary), swim (it’s custom built, chlorinated, and has a wooden deck), and snack at the food trucks parked nearby. There’s also free drinks and live music from local artists like the Effinays. Get in on the fun from noon until 8 p.m.

Saturday night also marks your last chance to catch the divisive film Post Tenebras Lux. The screening was booed at Cannes, but director Carlos Reygadas took home the Best Director prize. This one isn’t for the kids, but it is just about your only opportunity see a film that has plenty of people talking. Jason Heid on FrontRow gave it a positive review, calling “utterly captivating.”

Sunday

I probably shouldn’t even bother. You’ll all be watching Breaking Bad, anyway, which you can do from the comfort of your own home, or with friends at the Granada Theater, where you can see the beginning of the end on the big screen. It’s free.

But you guys know me. I’d never miss an opportunity to bring up Joss Whedon. The North Texas Browncoats (so named for the Independence fighters in Whedon’s short-lived but much loved sci-fi series Firefly) are taking part in Equality Now’s nationwide charity screening event Can’t Stop the Serenity. Head to the Lakewood Theater for showings of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and Serenity, interspersed with a costume contest, auction, and an evil laugh contest. Proceeds support the non-governmental organization, which works to protect and promote the human rights of women and girls on a global scale.
