Kurt Daniels, who blogs on the Dallas Stars site, has posted a great recap of how each NHL team got its nickname. Worth checking out (no pun intended … seriously; I didn’t mean it). Also on a hockey-related note but not of local interest: You see that outdoor game in Buffalo yesterday? Crazy. I figured it was just a gimmick to get people to watch a hockey game. It worked for me, though.

Awesome, awesome game. Crosby winning it on the last shootout shot? Tell me there wasn’t a single person watching who wanted to be him!!!! Winning a game like that in front of 73,000 fans plus all the TV viewers? It is like a dream come true for pond players in states like Minnesota or Wisconsin.
Kurt needs to re-blog and remove this reference in the Maple Leafs “He may have also drawn inspiration from a former Toronto team called the East Maple Leaves, not to mention his country’s flag, which prominently features a Maple Leaf.”
The flag wasn’t born until some 50-odd years after the club was formed.
