HOOP ECONOMICS

|

A curious FrontBurnervian asks, “Don’t the Mavericks make even more money than the Rangers? That Mark Cuban is brilliant!” Well, yes, Cubes is a sharp fellow, but no, his Mavericks actually lose money. According the Forbes report, last year the Mavericks lost $17.8 million on revenues of $124 million. In fact, 11 of the 30 NBA teams showed a loss. (The Phoenix Suns and the LA Lakers are the cash cows, with profits of $40M and $38M, respectively.) Still, Cuban can’t be upset with his investment. He paid $280 million for the team in January, 2000; today, Forbes pegs the franchise’s value at $403 million, but it would almost assuredly fetch more than that.
