DISD: HEAD IN THE SAND?

|

Something’s been bugging me. Our December cover story, as you can see, is titled “The DISD Asbestos Coverup.” This story came out more than two weeks ago. It contains some serious allegations: that the district knowingly exposed its workers and students to asbestos, that it attempted to cover up this exposure by lying and altering documents, and that it has been doing this for years. The article contains findings from a joint EPA and Texas Department of State Health Services investigation, including a secretly tape-recorded, very damning conversation a DISD worker had with his boss. Since the story has come out, we’ve heard from a couple DISD contractors who have told us they’re not surprised, given their own dealings with the district.

What bugs me is that we haven’t heard from the district. I know that if someone accused me of breaking the law and endangering children’s lives, and if those accusations were false, I’d pick up the phone, writer a letter, do anything and everything to proclaim my innocence. We haven’t heard a peep from 3700 Ross Avenue.
