It’s a fine evening outside, I could be down at Malai Kitchen drinking cocktails and listening to live jazz, but instead I’m drinking champagne and knocking back the cheeses in the shadow of a vase of lavender roses. Here at Hotel St. Germain, you don’t have to squint too hard to imagine that you’ve landed in a London/French/Euro B&B instead of in Uptown. The tassled draperies, the champagne, the mountainous plate of fermentables at my elbow (which I’m certain was meant for two people but which I have already decimated) paint a picture of the kind of storybook European getaway that babies are conceived in.
