Wine Dinner Wednesday: Slow Restaurant Week Edition

It’s a little slow in the restaurant business this week. Here’s a little news.

Urbano Café. New dinner hours. Now open for lunch on Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; dinner is served Tuesday through Saturday from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. Reservations are still recommended. They’ve also updated their lunch menu to feature goodies like smoked chicken and red pepper ravioli with pesto cream sauce, steak frites, and the Urbano burger with choice of fontina, smoked Gouda or Cambozola cheese. Aurora. December’s cooking class is Wild Game. The four-course lunch with wine pairing will take place on Saturday, December 19 at 10:00 a.m. $95. 214.528.9400

Gingerbread House Contest at NorthPark. Builders, chefs, and community members teamed up to start the “Home Sweet Gingerbread Home” competitions at NorthPark Center. Chef and cookbook author Karel Ann Tieszen teamed up with Shared Housing boardmember Mona Lincoln and TX State Fair Celebri-chef Peter Clarac (he was a winner in the Oprah cook-off) to decide which of the houses would be awarded the coveted blue ribbon. Pastry Chef Instructor at the Art Institute of Dallas Nina Hunter amazed the
judges with her beautiful victorian home complete with playful penguins enjoying the pool in the backyard and was awarded first place.
Thursday the “Builders and Bakers” competition will be taking place from 12pm to 4pm also at NorthPark. Teams comprised of members from the Home Builders Association of Greater Dallas will be creating homes onsite with celebrity chefs from Stephan Pyles, Sambuca, Old Hickory Steakhouse at the Gaylord Texan, Tillmans, DCʼs Catering and The Cupcakery. They will then be judged and awarded various prizes in differentcategories.

The competitions will benefit two great organizations – Shared Housing Center and HomeAid / Homebuilders Care, both which break the cycle of homelessness and abuse in the Dallas area.

    I had lunch at URBANO yesterday and it was sensational. The cream of jalapeno soup and the panini ‘Urbano Club’ with smoked turkey and prociuto ad herbs and God knows what with some soft cheese that was over the top wonderful.

    PS: I had lunch today at the downtown Neiman Marcus and had the $30 buffet which was unbelievable with rare prime rib, tuna rare, smoked salmon, wild rice, herbal potato cakes…… just run and get in on the holiday lunch. It was without a doubt the best buffet I have ever been to.

  • They just did a Gingerbread house competition on Food Network Challenge. These were HUGE!!! Looking forward to the Northpark ones..
