For more than 30 years, Dallas Black Dance Theatre has produced powerful performances that stand out among the best in the local dance scene. DanceAfrica, a collaboration between the DBDT, DanceAfrica artistic director Chuck Davis, Bandan Koro Drum and Dance Ensemble, and the Booker T. Washington HSPVA World Dance Ensemble, is a yearly tradition. The two-day performance (Friday and Saturday night) at the Winspear Opera House combines art, music, and community events with dance to celebrate African history and culture. Don’t miss the marketplace in Annette Strauss Square all day Saturday, where you’ll find arts, kid-friendly crafts, and entertainment.
Also on Saturday, the Crow Collection hosts a family block party celebration on Flora Street in the Arts District in honor of its newly-opened sculpture garden. Six years in the making, the garden boasts 15 works of contemporary and historical sculpture from Japan, Jorea, India, Indonesia, and China, plus maple, bamboo, and azalea trees, vegetation, natural limestone, and a dry landscape garden. Stop by for art activities, food trucks, guided tours of the new garden, music, and traditional dance performances. The street will be blocked off from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
If you harbor hopes of taking the family to see The Lion King at the Music Hall at Fair Park, be aware that the State Fair is working its magic. Tickets are scare. Buy yours in advance. And then you can get into the State Fair for free on the same day as your performance.
