WNBA’s Dallas Wings Loses CEO Mary O’Connor

After just nine months on the job, the executive is gone from the region's new professional basketball team.

Mary O’Connor is no longer president and CEO of the Dallas Wings, the relatively new WNBA team that plays in Arlington.

The team said the CEO resigned but it did not a give a reason why. Greg Bibb, who has served as Dallas Wings’ general manager since November 2015, will take over O’Connor’s duties along with managing basketball operations, the team said.

O’Connor was appointed president and CEO in July of last year, one year after the team, formerly known as the Tulsa Shock, relocated to Dallas. Since departing from the Wings, O’Connor has apparently launched her own firm called O’Connor & Advisors LLC this month, according to her LinkedIn page.

Bibb has spent 19 years in the sports industry. He previously served as the head of business operations for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics from 2007-2012 and the NBA Washington Wizards from 2010-2012. Prior to that, he was the president of Hantz Group Sports Entertainment for two years and helped launch the Detroit Ignition of the Major Indoor Soccer League. He also has served as the executive vice president and general manager of the Philadelphia KiXX soccer team and as the director of public and media relations of the MISL.

Prior to joining the Dallas Wings, O’Connor served as the senior vice president of sports for The Marketing Arm, a Dallas-based sports marketing agency owned by New York City-based Omnicom Group. There she was charged with new business and driving strategy and market development initiatives. During her tenure there, she worked with clients including AT&T and Hilton. She also previously served as director at independent media agency Carat Sponsorship Solutions, where she worked with clients like The New York Times, Home Depot, and Schick. She also spent five years at General Motors Corp. in various positions that crossed sponsorship, communications, marketing, and customer relations responsibilities.
