Evening at Pops

Fridays at 8 p.m. on 13

Pop in for music to begin your weekend with a lilt as Boston’s famous Pops Orchestra opens a new season. On July 6, Perry Como headlines a tribute to Bing Crosby. Then, on July 13, the music of Pops conductor John Williams is saluted by director Steven Spielberg, with special guest star Maureen McGovern. Sisters Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle appear on July 20 to bring their country sound to New England, and, don’t worry, Bobby McFerrin (pictured) and his Voicestra will be happy to perform a selection of popular tunes on July 27.



Bounty Hunters

Wednesday, July 25, at 9 p.m. on 13

In an era of overflowing jails and accused criminals who jump bail, bounty hunting is making a comeback-and there’s big money to be made for those who will take it on. This special is the story of three of these bounty hunters as they track down fugitives loose in California. They carry guns, but say their most effective weapon is the telephone.

Adventure

Thurdays at 7 p.m. on 13

This season’s premiere, A Tramp in the Darien. journeys to the Darien Gap. a dense jungle between Panama and Colombia (July 5). The following weeks, the series goes Fishing the Himalayas (July 12), finds a forgotten waterway in Lost Man’s River (July 19) and walks the varied and surprising length of Japan in Down the Spine of Japan (July 26). Join Adventure this summer for a series of walks on the wild side.



POV

Tuesdays at 11 p.m. on 13

This series, filmed by independent producers, spans a variety of controversial topics this month. On July 3, Metamorphosis: Man Into Woman tells the candid, sometimes humorous, journey of a man who wants to become a woman July 17’s episode, Letter to the Next Generation, follows 1960s radical-turned-filmmaker Jim Klein as he visits Kent State’s campus to see how students-and the country-have changed in the past 20 years. In Salesman on July 24, viewers travel door-to-door with a Bible salesman; and, July 31 on Police Chiefs, three big-city police chiefs reveal sharply different philosophies of law enforcement.



Star Cops

Saturdays at 11.30 p.m beginning July 7 on 13

Don’t miss the premiere of this new and exciting science-fiction series that looks at police work in the year 2027 Nathan Spring (David Calder) is a world-weary detective from the old school -more Sherlock Holmes than Robocop-who accepts a position as head of the Star Cops, a group of international crime-fighters with headquarters in outer space. Battling criminals who wreak havoc, murder and extortion, Spring fights for truth, justice and the international way.
