NANN GOPLERUD TO CHANNEL 8: “SEE YA.”

|

The string of high-profile departures continues. Nann Goplerud is leaving Channel 8. Below you’ll find the e-mail from the long-time reporter and executive producer to staffers. My question: um, do professors make as much as reporters-slash-producers at major TV stations?

I have decided to retire from Channel 8 at the end of this year. After 21 years here, I now have an incredible opportunity to start a new career as a university professor! In January, I will join the faculty at the University of North Texas as an Associate Professor of Journalism and Radio-TV-Film. It’s what is sometimes referred to as a “legacy” job. I have been hired to play a key role in merging the two departments (yes, R-TV-F and Journalism are separate departments right now), and create a new major in Broadcast Journalism. I will also teach two classes each semester plus work with another person in handling the news operation at the student television station, NTTV.

As many of you know, I taught at SMU in the evenings during the late ’80’s-early ’90’s. Who knew how much I would enjoy being in the classroom!! Since then, I’ve kept my eye open for the chance to teach full time. And now it’s happened!

I first learned about this new UNT position in December, and started the application process back then (the university clock doesn’t tick quite as fast as ours does!) It’s now official!

As I told Michael, I’ll be here through the end of the year and will help him during those months in making this wonderful newsroom into the powerhouse we know it can be!

I’m extremely excited about my new opportunity! I’m all smiles now. My tears about leaving all of you will come later.
