Politico is reporting that Dallas U.S. Rep. Colin Allred plans to run against Sen. Ted Cruz for one of the state’s seats in the U.S. Senate.

The website reports that the announcement could come “as soon as this week.” A spokesman for Allred declined to comment. The civil rights attorney and former NFL player beat U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions in 2018 for the 32nd District, which includes the eastern portions of Dallas, Richardson, Plano, and a chunk of Garland. Redistricting in 2020 drew boundaries to favor Democratic candidates.

Cruz was last up for election in 2018, when former Rep. Beto O’Rourke came within 2.6 percentage points of winning the seat. Here’s Politico:

Allred may well follow O’Rourke’s model. Even if he doesn’t win, he will raise his political cachet with a 2024 run against Cruz — giving himself national exposure and building a massive donor list.

He has demonstrated an ability to excite Democrats and pick up independents or moderate Republicans, earning endorsements from the AFL-CIO and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for his congressional runs.
