img_5620 copy“It’s sad, but nothing lasts forever” a reminiscent Gil Bonifaz explains of the impending closure of his restaurant. He and his mother, Cynthia, have been operating the Herrera’s on Denton Drive for 14 years. Gil’s great grandmother, Amelia, first opened the restaurant in 1981.

Bonifaz explains that the complex on the corner of Denton Dive and Hudnall Street (which also houses Elliot’s Hardware) will be torn down and turned into a mixed-use development with retail and apartments.

“We’re looking for a new space in the Love Field neighborhood, and our Omni location is opening soon,” Bonifaz says. News broke in 2014 that a modernized version of the Tex-Mex restaurant was slated to open at the Downtown Dallas hotel.

“We’re going to have a completely new chef at the Omni location,” he explains. “And a simpler menu with elevated plating. We’re still going to have good Tex-Mex food, and we’re putting in a fajita bar. There will be a counter where people can watch the meat being grilled.”

While an opening date has not yet been decided on, he hopes it will be soon.

In the meantime, Bonifaz will focus on saying goodbye to his loyal customers at the Denton Drive location.

“I can still see the faces of people who have come here when they were babies and are now adults,” he says. “Come say goodbye. Have a last meal.”

The restaurant’s final dinner service will be Saturday, January 30.
