Goat cheese production appears to be more popular than ever here in Texas. I’ve written previously about some of my favorite goat cheese makers, but one name that has popped back up over and over again is Latte Da Dairy in Flower Mound.
I attended Latte Da’s open house event last spring with a former work colleague and her young daughter. Although I departed long ago, she continues to work at one of Dallas’ most established restaurants, and Latte Da is one of the many nearby farms they source menu ingredients from. At the time they were purchasing goat milk to make ricotta in house to accompany beautifully ripe Texas tomatoes.
When you work at a restaurant that commits to using local ingredients, making your way out to visit the farm and meeting the people behind it becomes essential. You want to tell their story and share their passion with others.
It’s easy to have a good time when you’re watching adorable baby goats attempt to walk while sampling every kind of cheese you can imagine. Creamy goat cheese was the main attraction, and Latte Da offered a series of different flavor combinations, in addition to some aged cheeses. This event was one of the two times a year you can purchase anything you enjoyed directly from the farm.
My favorite product they make is their Chocolate Chèvre truffles. I first noticed them earlier this month while browsing the massive cheese department at Central Market. Made with goat milk, semisweet chocolate, and vanilla, these truffles are unlike any I’ve had before. They’re cool, creamy, and subtly sweet. The tangy goat cheese shines brightly here. If you love cheese and chocolate these are a treat worth seeking out.
