Is this real life?
Is this real life?

Fans of Hayao Miyazaki know that the Japanese animator had originally said that his latest film, The Wind Rises, would be his last. Maybe, maybe not. Either way, I want to see this one.

The film is based on the true story of Jiro Horikoshi, who designed many of Japan’s World War II fighter planes, including the Mitsubishi A6M Zero. Jiro is a near-sighted boy who dreams of becoming a pilot—and when circumstance doesn’t allow that, he becomes a designer. It’s currently in wide release, and you should see the film in theaters here while you can. The Angelika has screenings tonight, as does the NorthPark AMC.

Meanwhile, the music of Queen has taken over the Music Hall at Fair Park in the form of We Will Rock You, a musical that functions not just as a vehicle for the band’s multitude of hits but also as a cautionary tale of a homogenized society where music comes out of a computer and instruments are outlawed. When aspiring rockers band together for a Bohemian resistance, a man named Galileo emerges to lead the rebellion. Remember that all DSM shows start earlyish at 7:30 p.m., which doesn’t always leave a ton of time for eating beforehand. That’s generally why I end up at Meridian Room.
