Fans of Downton Abbey should flock to tonight’s Dallas Museum of Art Arts and Letters Live event. They’ve invited Jessica Fellowes, the niece of series creator Julian Fellowes and the author of a few bestselling books devoted to her behind-the-scenes insights as well as the historical context for the world of the TV show. As with this week’s earlier author talk, Fellowes will speak at the First United Methodist Church downtown, across the street from the Dallas Museum of Art, in order to allow for more attendees. If you feel like arriving a little early, drop by the DMA first for a guided tour of paintings and decorative art from the era.
Also this evening, Echo Theatre has transformed the Bath House Cultural Center into the Echo Room, a 1930s supper club celebrating the female songwriters of the early 20th century. The experience of Her Song includes a dance floor, Champagne, and a live band playing standards like “What a Difference a Day Makes.”
Saturday
For those looking for something more family-oriented, the Dallas Opera presents a kid-friendly introduction to the art form at the Winspear. They’ve plucked opera’s best-known songs for an afternoon concert, so it’s also a good primer for anyone looking to familiarize themselves with the classics before the futuristic Death and the Powers opens later in February. It’s just five bucks to attend.
Another Arts District option is the Chinese New Year Festival at the Crow Collection. It’s always a big to-do, and the Year of the Horse is no exception. They’ll shut down that block of Flora Street to celebrate the Lunar New Year with performances, art activities, and all kinds of food and drink. There will also be miniature horses, so if small-scale versions of large things freak you out, beware.
Sunday
It seems like the Super Bowl is still on. I’m so much less excited for it this year since I’m not really a fan of either the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Bruno Mars. But there are plenty of places to watch in Dallas, and our Raya Ramsey has rounded up the best of the best. You can see her list of top spots right here. If you don’t feel like football, it’s a good day to check out everything the Modern Museum of Art in Fort Worth has going on right now. Namely, an exhibit of work by the artist Fred Tomaselli, creator of psychedelic paintings made of various layers of resin, photo collage, and acrylic. Admission is free on the first Sunday of the month.
