On a related note, a very savvy portfolio manager I know says the easiest way to know when to short a stock is when a company announces it is building a new corporate headquarters.  When that happens, the CEO has started believing his press clippings and it’s time to move on, because his priorities are all out of whack.

A former boss of mine also used to decry developer-CEOs’ “Edifice Complexes” — the need to establish one’s “legacy” by erecting a building to be remembered by.
