NIGHT OF THE LIVING POWER OUTTAGE

|

D North Bureau Report: “Someday a real rain is going to come and wash the scum from the streets.”

So a category four fence killer blew through at about 19:25 hours and knocked out the electricity. Power was out in the area until about 21:20. Well, everyone else’s was. The backup generators kicked in at my house — or “compound” as the feds like to call it — at about 19:26.

Everything was fine until we noticed our neighbors. When the rain eased off they started wandering aimlessly in the dark streets and alleyways of the neighborhood, drawn to the lights coming from my residence like zombies in a George Romero flick. Seeing their confused faces, and knowing many probably had dinner cooking when the lights went out, we did the only thing we could. We did the right thing.

We shut down the lights, set the perimeter defenses and retreated into the underground shelter. I don’t think I’ll be getting back any of those power tools I’ve loaned out over the years.
