RE: MARCHING MEXICANS

|

I left early yesterday for a meeting and returned today to find 13 e-mails about the Monday “brownout” that left some restaurants empty. A few examples:

I had gone to Mia’s on Lemmon for dinner on Saturday night. A big sign read: “closed May 1.” I asked the owner if that had anything to do with the immigration boycott and he said they were calling it Mexican Labor Day. He also said the owner of Mi Cocina was planning to shut down all 14 resturants–not so much in support of the boycott but because they were in fear the staff wouldn’t show. Viva TEX MEX! I THINK THEY WERE MISSED!

And this:

I drive down Spring Valley Road (between Coit and Manana) on my way home from work, and pass by a Hispanic area of shops – Cuquitas, Fiesta Market, La Michocana, Pizza Patron, etc. I found it very curious that most of those places that cater to the Hispanic market were in fact closed yesterday. La Michochana, which is in an old Danals space was a ghost town. Nothing. The only thing open of any size was Fiesta. Curious.
