Thumbs down to DISD board members Kathlyn Gilliam. Yvonne Ewell, and Thomas Jones for staging protests to underscore their adamant-and destructive-opposition to “unitary status” for the school district. For more than thirty years, DISD has been under the purview of the federal courts because of desegregation problems. But for all practical purposes, our schools have been desegregated for years-except in the minds of professional demagogues who blame all the problems of minorities on that ever-handy menace, institutional racism. Gilliam and the others are undercutting the efforts of Superintendent Marvin Edwards, who wants the district freed from judicial control. We heartily agree.
