Farm to Market Report: Weekend of July 21-22

Root beer floats, cooking demonstrations, and classes on everything from pickling to catching rain water await you at local markets this weekend.

Celebration Farmers Market: Holleman Farms will return from vacation this week with Red Wattle pork, as well as their standard offerings of fresh eggs and whole chickens. Jerry from Joy Farm will have tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and of course, Texas peaches. Get them while you still can. If you notice any of your favorite regular vendors are missing, stop inside the market store. Many of them leave their products for sale when they can’t make it to the farmers market.

4515 W. Lovers Ln.
Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Grapevine Farmers Market will be getting some interesting melons in for the weekend. Look for Pecos cantaloupe, locally grown Israeli melon, and orange flesh honeydew. Market Organizer Jack Morehead advises that this year’s Texas peach season started early, and will finish early. Freestone peaches will be here this weekend but not for much longer. Freestone peaches separate from the pit easily. You’re less like likely to tear the meat, which makes them great for grilling, entertaining, or anything you might want a nice presentation for.

325 S. Main Street
Thursday – Saturday,  8:00 am – 4:00 p.m.

Fairview Farms Marketplace is a little different than most farmers markets, since they send their staff to the farms to purchase goods, rather than having the farmers come to the market. They’ve chosen a similar selection to last week’s list of goodies: cherries, strawberries, watermelons, blackberries, tomatoes, and summer squash.

3312 N. Central Expressway
Tuesday – Sunday , 8:00 a.m. – 9:00p.m.

Jump for more markets.

The Market to Kitchen Chef Series is back this Saturday

Coppell Farmers Market: If you’re heading out to Coppell this weekend, be sure to be at the market by 10:00 a.m. for the next cooking demonstration in the Market to Kitchen Chef Series. Chef John Franke of The Ranch at Las Colinas will show us how to make his herb roasted chicken with grilled Texas peach salad. He’s developed this recipe to showcase at least ten ingredients from the market.

Local produce this weekend will include corn, eggplant, small and large varieties of sun ripened tomatoes, yellow and eight ball squash, zucchini, patty pan white squash, green beans, mushrooms (portabella and button), onions, peppers, shelled peas and beans. Melons will include Israeli, watermelons, and cantaloupe varieties. It’s nearly last call last call for peaches, strawberries and blueberries, so prepare to freeze ’em, can ’em or make ’em in to preserves. Don’t forget to swing by the Sundance Gardens booth and try some of their butter crust beer bread. A true Texas product, it has Shiner Bock in the dough that is removed from the oven half way through the baking process to receive a butter bath.

793 S. Coppell Rd.
Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Dallas Farmers Market: The AIWF cooking class series continues this week with a class themed “The Thrill of The Grill” with Mark McDaniel of ReMARKable Affairs Cafe. You can register in advance for a discount, or pay at the door. It’s not too late to sign up for Wednesday’s Basic Pickling and Canning class, where you’ll learn all you need to know to preserve your seasonal farmers market favorites, or the excess from your garden at home. This is the kind of class that would be great fun for a gardening club to attend as a group.

1010 S. Pearl Expressway
Daily, 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Four Seasons Market: If you like consistency, you’ll like this market. They have a lot of loyal vendors who are there every week, so if you really like something one week, you’ll more than likely find it there the next. Gilbert – Pruett Farm and La Esperanza farm will be the local produce providers in Richardson this weekend, while Tierra Sienna will be selling grass fed beef. Empire Baking will be out with fresh bread. I particularly like their jalapeno cheese bread because, if you’re lucky, you’ll get a loaf with pieces of cheese large enough that they’ll get gooey again in the toaster.

677 W. Campbell Rd.
Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Grand Prairie Farmers Market will be serving root beer floats for $2 to help keep you cool. The market will also hold a “Make It and Take It” class on rain barrels from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to help you keep your garden watered the environmentally friendly way. Advance registration is required. I hope that having a rain barrel in Texas in July and August works a little bit like washing your car as far as tempting the skies to open up.

120 W. Main St.
Saturday, 8:00 a.m.  –  1:00 p.m.

St. Michael’s Farmers Market has another impressive list of vendors this week. Just Pie will be there, though they won’t have just pie. Rumor has it they’ll also have some granola and other seasonal snacks. Holy Kombucha will have fermented tea products for sale by the bottle. Pure Land Organic will be bringing Sweetie and Golden Nugget tomatoes, and a variety of types of squash and peppers. Those are just a few of this week’s vendors. There are a total of seven produce growers due this weekend, so look for great selection of in-season fruits and veggies.

8011 Douglas
8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Frisco Farmers Market: D-Bar Farms will have juicy Texas peaches here as well. Frisco welcomes a new craft vendor this week. Our Busy Hands takes unwanted items such as soda caps and milk cartons and recycles them artfully into jewelery, wallets, and other whimsical items for the home, or for a college student’s dorm room.

6048 Frisco Square Blvd.
Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
