Tonight , the 2nd annual Jub Jam will take place at The Kessler in honor of The Senior Source, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of older adults in the Dallas-Fort Worth area through protection, employment, and similar services. Hosted by Sports Radio 130 host George “Jub Jub” Dunham, the altuistic affair will be supported by a silent auction and a benefit concert featuring a lineup of country & folk favorites. Expect appearances from Bobby Duncan, Steve Helms, The Bird Dogs, The Damn Quails, Michael Padgett and other entertainers throughout tonight in support.
The House of Blues welcomes pop rock trio HAIM to its stage as part of the Los Angeles natives’ 2014 domestic tour. Their debut album, Days of Gone, dominated pop and rock charts in 2013 and propelled the sisters to mainstream popularity, star-studded collaborations and performances, and even a contract with Jay Z’s Roc Nation later in the year. They’ll make their second Dallas appearance tonight, with electronic-R&B solo act Shy Girls.
Decks at the Park, a monthly celebration of beats and Dallas DJs, will feature sets from Paradise, Typecast, Jeff Mitchell, Red Sean, and special guest DJ Spinderella. Hosted by Mitchell and DJ S.O.U.L.Jah, the event provides a variety of sounds, including reggae, electronica, house, soul and funk. The fun kicks off at 7pm at Klyde Warren Park.
New York-based avant jazz group AfroHORN will perform at the Dallas Latino Cultural Center as part of the center’s ongoing lineup of cultural events. The band will make similar appearances in Dallas throughout the weekend as part of a Dallas residency, before moving onto Houston, so don’t miss your chance see them.
As always, Dallas’ DJs will be performing several residencies tonight: join Colly T at the Beauty Bar for VIBE; DJ Sober for The Basement at The Travis; DJ Spacechase’s Subsonic Indulgence will kick off at Andy’s and Yeahdef’s Y2k will take place at Hailey’s.
Orgullo Primitivo/Habu Habu/Gerard Bendiks (The Union): This self-proclaimed “non-commercial” gallery is hosting an evening of experimental film and music, and it sounds like they have found some sound and vision to accompany their art aesthetic. There will also be a screening of a Kurtz Frausun film.The gallery is located in the Cedars, at 1531 Gano. Donations are encouraged.
Update: It should be mentioned that Future Islands are at Three Links, but the show is sold out. Too bad, they were great at South by Southwest. That’s why that festival still matters; you could have already seen them twice by now and not have to deal with the sell-out.
Also, James Murphy is DJing at It’ll Do. I don’t think I have to tell you that’s a big deal. His last show there was insanely packed and well-received, even if some of the old school DJs he kind of made less relevant aren’t the biggest fans of his willfully minimal DJ skills. —Christopher Mosley
