The Movies
June doesn’t watch movies yet, but she loves Albert Lamorisse’s book The Red Balloon, and I can’t wait until she sees the movie. I love Annie Hall and the music documentary Punk: Attitude.
The Music
The Muppet Show Soundtrack, John Singer Sergeant (her dad’s musical stylings), KXT 91.7, and Kanye West’s Yeezus (for when I’m alone in the car).
The Books
The Charley Harper Collection of Alphabet and Coloring Books put out by Ammo Books in collaboration with Todd Oldham. I’ve also been using Ed Ruscha’s They Called Her Styrene to teach June the alphabet. And I really love The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and the plays of William Shakespeare.
The Haunts
We go to a lot of gallery and museum openings and shows. We frequent D Magazine’s FrontRow blog for the weekly list of new exhibitions and art events. Oil and Cotton in Oak Cliff has

remarkable art classes and cultural events for all age groups. Nasher Sculpture Center’s soundings performances and plays at the Undermain Theatre are also favorites. We try to see live music as much as possible. When we’re in need of some agrarian inspiration, we hiit the Dallas arboretum, the promise of peace community garden in East Dallas, and our family’s farm north of Fort Worth.
The Go-To Family Activity
We love afternoon neighborhood walks. Even when the weather is hot, we try to get outside as much as possible.
The Art Inspiration
Kristin Lucas’ Refresh. In 2007, in order to become the most current version of herself, the artist legally changed her name from Kristin Sue Lucas to Kristin Sue Lucas. Soberscove Press published the court transcripts, which became a philosophical debate on the nature of change. Bill Viola’s the greeting at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and any painting by Fort Worth artist Kirk Hayes.
