When its current owners first toured 5127 W. Amherst Ave., they fell in love with the charming 1940 cottage. They adored the covered front porch and its swing. And the original fireplace in the foyer? They were sold, says listing agent Marjan Wolford.

The 83-year-old Briarwood house has kept much of its 40s-era features and character, like the original hardwood floors. But it’s undergone several renovations over the years. “So, this house has a lot of the original charm, but with a little bit more of a modern updated finish,” Wolford says. In the 1980s, the then-owners expanded, adding another living room and bedroom. The current owners installed new air ducts and insulation, a security system, toilets, a garage door, a washer and dryer, and more. They redid the landscaping in the front and back yards, planting 10 new trees, including hollies and Japanese maples.

Wolford says the various owners have put work into preserving the house throughout its life, but there’s still plenty of opportunity for its new owners to put their own touch on it. They could expand the kitchen, for example. And the property has “got a beautiful backyard so somebody could expand [the house] even further and build up if they wanted to.”

The best part, however, of this property is the neighborhood, Wolford says. It’s conveniently located near the private school corridor and a 10-minute drive from Dallas-Love Field. It’s just a 10-minute walk from Inwood Village and a 20-minute walk—or 4-minute drive—from Bluff View Park.

The neighborhood itself has plenty of charm, too. Briarwood is becoming an “it” location, Wolford says. “You have a really good mix of cottages mixed with Mediterranean homes [and] modern new construction.” But the houses aren’t all new construction—new builds stand next to early-aught constructions and more historic properties, like this cottage.

The close-knit community is also great, says Wolford, who lives in the neighborhood. It’s easy to become friends here. Residents are friendly, walking around the block or up to the park.

“On a Saturday, Sunday, on the weekends, you’ll see kids running outside with scooters and bikes,” she says. “There’s just a very strong community feel.”
