Friday Fun With Jim Williamson

This week, Jim talks Jan Hooks, Jessica Lange, and the basement at the Alamo.

Hello, I am leaving for Chicago in a few hours, and I’m kind of freaking out. So I’m going to turn things over to my friend, ID Collection’s Jim Williamson. Let’s just get right to it today, shall we? Mr. Jim needs to focus on his day job—you know, the one that pays. Today will consist of pulling lots of fabric samples to scheme more than a few rooms for some out-of-town clients and tracking down some furniture, which is sometimes like having a tooth pulled without novocain. It is that much fun.

There is a lot going on this weekend with the Red River Rivalry and all. Since I didn’t go to Texas or OU (I went to GSU), and I live near the Cotton Bowl, I will be spending the day away from the Cotton Bowl. I would rather not run errands in my neighborhood while 92,100 people are entering it and trying to park on any and every available surface.

Here is a helpful hint: If you are planning on dining out this weekend, I hope you already have reservations. Otherwise, you are in for a long wait. We have plans with friends Saturday night and when we called to add another couple to the reservation, I could have sworn I actually heard laughter on the other end of the telephone

In sad, people-dying news, comedienne Jan Hooks passed away. She was so talented and always made me belly laugh. What some of you probably don’t know is that Jan got her start on The Bill Tush Show, which was on a small local station in Atlanta called WTCG. The channel would later became the giant TBS. Anyway, Jan played a variety of characters on the show, which had a very small production budget. One of my favorite characters she played was the small-town television evangelist, who had a baptismal font that was really one of those flowing fountain things for punch. She would sing great religious classics while asking for money for Jesus. One such classic was “I Found the Glory,” and it went something like: “I found the Glory. I found the Glory. I found the Glory. It cleaned my rug.
It cleaned my rug!”

Glory was a well-known carpet cleaner at the time that was advertised non-stop. Every southern household had a can of Glory. I was also very young and loved commercials so much that I would recite them constantly, much to my families chagrin.

In design news, the Dwell with Dignity preview party was last night. There were lines of people (almost as long as the line of Maseratis in valet) clamoring to get in at 5:30. The VIP event started at 6 pm, folks. What a great problem to have for such a good cause. It was nice to seeing people bidding on all the items and seeing people I had not seen in a while. It was a Who’s Who of design meets society meets movers and shakers. And there were also people who just love design.

It was also fun running into my long-time buddy and world-traveling style monger, Michelle Nussbaumer. Michelle is another person that is always good for a laugh and for the planning of future adventures to exotic locations. (Max, if you are reading this—and you better be—I may or may not have committed us to a few simple trips next year starting with Gstaad, Paris, London, and Mexico. So I hope you are working hard on that bonus, baby.)

After my fingers collapsed from texting Max items that I wanted to bid on, it was time to join him and his work colleagues (all super nice) at CBC. Have I told you how happy I am to have a place where I can now walk across the street and get a very cold beer and a sandwich? Then it was time to run home and finish American Horror Story: Freak Show. Jessica Lange, they should just give you every award available in the world now and just be done with it. No awards shows this season because we have given them all to Jessica!

But let’s talk about that clown. I am definitely part of the clowns-scare-the-crap-out-of-me crowd, which started early in life when my Mom took me to the circus. We were right on the front row, and I was loving it because it was my first time at the circus. That all ended when the clown came up to us during the show to do a trick. I lost it. I started crying and screaming, convinced the clown would snatch me and eat me. Of course, he didn’t. Mrs. Marilyn could not get me out of there fast enough. I am sure she was thrilled to have gone to all that trouble only to have to leave early because Jimbo. Oh, the joys of parenthood!

And since the blog touches on funny Designing Women (See how I worked Jan Hooks back in there?), let’s take a look at some of the new collection from one of the driest and wittiest designers around, Nina Campbell. This is from her new Cathay collection of wallpapers and fabrics. It is happy and fun—much like the fun women we have talked about today.

And finally, Sunday is a Café Momentum pop-up brunch at Knife. I think this maybe the first brunch they have done, and if there’s anything Dallas folks love, it’s some brunch. If it hasn’t sold out already (chances are, it has) go gets tickets now! And where else but Dallas can you shop and dine out at fabulous restaurants (two things that are practically state-wide pastimes like football and basketball) while also helping others improve and better their lives through great charitable causes like Dwell with Dignity and Café Momentum?

So that wraps yet another week. Have fun, be careful, and I hope you find your own kind of glory this weekend—whether it is a great design find, a team win, or a delicious meal.

And always remember folks: “There is no basement in the Alamo, silly!”
