Hollywood Home and Garden Tour is part of Architecture360, Dallas Center for Architecture’s and AIA Dallas’ version of Architecture Month.

Hollywood/Santa Monica, a unique, historic neighborhood in East Dallas, is hosting its 22nd annual Hollywood Home & Garden Tour this weekend. This home tour celebrates the unique 1920s and 1930s architecture of the neighborhood, nestled in tree-covered hills just south of White Rock Lake. It offers a glimpse of this delightful, historic East Dallas neighborhood and its remarkable collection of Tudor cottages. Events include:

The neighborhood began in the mid 1920s when J. B. Salmon’s Hollywood Land Company acquired dairy farm land on the rolling hills east of downtown Dallas and south of White Rock Lake at what was then the outskirts of Dallas. The new Hollywood Addition included middle-class homes that reflected the character of the English and French cottages the returning Doughboys had seen in Europe during WWI; these new homes included Tudor Revival cottages as well as Spanish and French Eclectic, Craftsman, Minimal Traditional and the occasional Monterrey and Pueblo Revival architectural styles. The adjacent Santa Monica Addition soon followed and the two neighborhoods became known as Hollywood/Santa Monica. The historic neighborhood of 750 homes – most dating from the late 1920s and 1930s – is remarkably intact and became Dallas’ third Conservation District in 1989.
The Home & Garden Tour showcases four homes and two gardens; the homes include several restored or renovated Tudor cottages and one of the neighborhood’s few Tudor duplexes that was recently converted to a single-family residence. On Sunday, a Walking Tour of the neighborhood is will offer an overview of the neighborhood’s history and showcase its architecture. Meet at Lindsley Park at 11 a.m. to join us. Art in the Park at Lindsley Park follows at noon, with lunch available from food trucks. Picnic at the tables in the park, check out the arts and crafts for sale, and then let your kids enjoy the variety of children’s programs in the park. A truly fun, local, neighborhood gathering!
