At this point you’re likely either saddened or thrilled that March Madness—and its 
extensive creep into the first week of April—is finally over. Connecticut has walked away with yet another title, and SMU fans find little consolation in the fact that the Mustangs actually bested the champion Huskies twice this past season. There’s always next year (but probably not).
If you haven’t heard, the Bruce Springsteen performance that closed out the March Madness Music Fest received almost unanimous praise from local critics. Did you see those fireworks? I’m not sure who paid for them, but I’ve joked that they were impressive enough that they could have drained a major city’s public art budget for the next 25 years. In short, they were gorgeous. We are still in the midst of at least two other multi-week events, however. First off, Dallas Arts Week is underway with events leading up to this weekend’s Dallas Art Fair. Tonight, the mayor will host a panel at Dallas City Performance Hall called “Re-imagining Art in Dallas: A Creative Conversation with Mayor Mike Rawlings.” The discussion features local figures such as Art & Seek’s Anne Bothwell, Undermain Theatre’s Katherine Owens, and artist and academic, Morehshin Allahyari. We actually just featured a gallery of images from Allahyari’s recent project, which was a shadow event to last week’s opening exhibition of the paintings of former President Bush. Cocktails will be served at 6 pm, with the talk to follow at 6:30. RSVP to [email protected] for a seat.
The Dallas International Film Festival is also very much alive, as SideDish has reported a Steven Spielberg sighting over at Mesero Miguel. Tonight the local hip hop documentary We From Dallas will be shown at the Angelika as part of the official program, and you should do your best to see it as it’s one of the few films that our critics let anywhere near an “A” rating.
