Happy Earth Day. I have to say, my favorite Earth Day reference is by rapper Pusha T, though I’m not sure he’s talking about recycling exactly in his hit song, “Numbers on the Boards.”

Nearly a year ago, our arts editor made the very good point that much of the artwork ever produced in the world is never seen, often only found in a “private collector’s home, or “corporation’s headquarters,” or the least desirable option: “shipped and stored in a warehouse somewhere.” The Heritage Auctions’ Dallas Design District Annex stepped in at the time, with a small preview of seldom-seen contemporary art that was headed to auction, yet made available for public viewing, even if only for a day.

Though the more obvious commercial aspects of design make it a more widely witnessed discipline, Heritage will again have a preview of some fairly special items that you might not see otherwise tonight, which will also be held at its Design District Annex. They’ll be hosting a reception preview for their 20th & 21st Century Design Auction, which officially starts tomorrow. Pieces are sourced from the estate of Ray F. Fleming, as well as a few sought-after items from the Dutch design firm, Droog. The latter was once the property of a Las Vegas Hotel, and the auctioning off is so significant, it made last week’s New York Times. You might not take the kids, however, lest you’re ready to be out thousands of dollars over one of Droog’s adult-sized Lego chairs. Drinks will be served and the event starts at 6 pm.

Following the auction preview, consider stopping by Sundown at Granada for a free show later in the evening. Dallas hip hop artist Jenny Robinson will perform and she’s always great live. The restaurant will also be serving half-price drafts, and that just might leave you with enough money for one of Sundown’s quinoa burgers. They’re great, but a little pricey. DJ Blake Ward will also be selecting tracks.
