Farm to Market Report: Weekend of November 17

Cooler temperatures are finally here, and that means it’s time to cuddle up with someone. What better date activity than venturing to a farmer’s market together and whipping up some concoction at home with your finds? Luckily, you have plenty of sweet deals to choose from this weekend, so find a market close to you and get started!

Celebration Farmers Market: This market is technically closed for the season, but this weekend you get to experience its special Thanksgiving market! Chef Gorji will be there just for the occasion, selling gift baskets. Each basket features four of his sauces, two pastas (including gnocchi), and his “Cooking with Gorji” DVD. Did I mention the collection of recipes for all the products? I’ll bet you know a foodie who’d love this present for the holidays.

Coppell Farmers Market: Alert! This is the last weekly market for the season. Winter markets will take place beginning in December, but for now, don’t miss the winter squashes, sweet potatoes, and greens to make your Thanksgiving a success. Did you pre-order a turkey? Be sure to pick it up Saturday. Just Pie is taking pie orders for delivery on Wednesday. Ta-da! Your holiday prep just got easier.

Cowtown Farmers Market: Don’t forget to bring your family to Cowtown next weekend. On November 24 from 8 a.m. until noon, bring the kiddos and have photographer Olaf Growald document the occasion at his “$5, 5 minute” photo studio. What a great idea for those annual holiday cards.

Dallas Farmers Market: If you are culinary-challenged like me, you won’t want to miss the Vegetarian Sides for Thanksgiving class at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Menu items include: parsnip and apple soup, tempeh and wild mushroom fricassee, gluten-free pumpkin dumplings, maple roasted brussels sprouts, and smashed turnips. Apparently, these dishes are “totally doable.” Sign up to find out.

Grapevine Farmers Market: The market is closed for the winter, but its full line of 100+ jarred goods, nuts, and candies are available at Texas Belles & Beaus on Main Street.

McKinney Farmers Market at Chestnut Square: This market is now on its winter schedule, so it is only open on the third Saturday of each month. That means this weekend! Get moving and get your hands on baked goods, wine, pasta, and sauces from vendors. Maybe even pick up some fresh flowers for the table.

Grand Prairie Farmers Market: This Saturday is “Gobble Daze” at the Grand Prairie market. Until 1 p.m., you can browse the food trucks, play “gobble” games, make turkey decorating crafts, and let the kids partake in face painting and bounce houses. And what else? Free pumpkins. (Yes, please.) The market has had so many that they are literally giving them away. Wouldn’t you rather make your Thanksgiving pie with fresh produce? I can smell the spices already.
