Longtime favorite local (and formerly local) acts return to North Texas this weekend, including Sarah Jaffe, Polyphonic Spree, Black Tie Dynasty, and Ben Kweller.

Sarah Jaffe

July 13, 9 p.m.| Dan’s Silverleaf, Denton

Sarah Jaffe will head to Denton Thursday for her Solo But Not Alone show, joined by Becki Howard. Although she calls New York home these days, Jaffe’s career (which includes plenty of albums, film scores, and singing on Eminem’s Grammy-winning song, “Bad Guy”) started in Denton. Corina Grove will open. Get tickets

Ben Kweller

July 14, 7 p.m.| Echo Lounge and Music Hall

Live music lovers in Dallas of a certain age probably first remember Ben Kweller as the teen frontman of the rock group Radish. These days, when he’s not opening for Ed Sheeran, he’s cranking out music. He recently reissued a deluxe edition of his 2000 solo album Sha Sha, which included the song “Wasted and Ready” that got some play on MTV, back when MTV showed music videos. Get tickets

Sounds of Deep Ellum Listening Party

July 14, 7 p.m.| Spinster Records

Deep Ellum 100 hit the ground running during the pandemic to provide grants to local artists, service workers, and businesses that were hardest hit by the disruption from COVID. As Deep Ellum celebrates its 150th birthday, the organization partnered with Oak Cliff’s Spinster Records to produce a compilation vinyl album that will feature local artists like Lorelei K, Cure for Paranoia, Memory Shivers, Stone Mecca, Maya Piata, Skinny Cooks, Flower Child, and more. On Friday, the album will be released and Spinster will host a listening party. Get details

Tanner Usery

July 14, 7 p.m.| Granada Theater

You have probably heard Tanner Usrey without realizing it. His 2020 single “The Light” was played in the fourth-season finale of the series Yellowstone, and last year his SOL Sessions album gained the Prosper artist more attention. Since then, he’s released singles like “Pick Up Your Phone” and a duet with Graycie York, “Beautiful Lies.”  Get tickets

Ace Frehley

July 15, 7 p.m.| Echo Lounge and Music Hall

I like KISS, but when your name is Beth and you say you like KISS, boys try to sing you that song, and it’s not a love song, it’s a song about how a boy’s stupid rock band is more important than his girlfriend. At any rate, Ace Frehley, guitar player and wearer of the “Spaceman” makeup, will be performing solo in the Design District this weekend. He has plenty of solo material, but expect a set list heavy on KISS hits and mercifully light on super dumb ballads. Get tickets

Black Tie Dynasty

July 15, 8 p.m.| Double Wide

After Black Tie Dynasty drummer Eddie Thomas died in 2020, the band (which had only just got back together after a 10-year break) decided to continue. They played an official reunion gig in Fort Worth last year, and released a new single, “Beginner.” They’ll be at the Double Wide Saturday, and Bifocals will open. Get tickets

Marca MP

July 15, 8 p.m.| Toyota Music Factory, Irving

The Mexican group Marca MP will bring their Brindo Tour to Irving Saturday night. Expect the group to bring their pared-down approach to romantic songs and corridos, captured in songs like “El Güero,”  “Ya Se Acabó,” and the more recent “Déjame Ser.”  Get tickets

Polyphonic Spree

July 15, 8 p.m.| Longhorn Ballroom

Twenty-three years ago this Saturday, The Polyphonic Spree took the stage at the Gypsy Tea Room, opening for Granddaddy and Bright Eyes. Since then the band, spearheaded by Tripping Daisy’s Tim DeLaughter, has performed its brand of psychedelic rock all over the globe.Their birthday set at the Longhorn this weekend celebrates the band’s latest album, Salvage Enterprise, but will also likely offer crowd favorites.
