Survey: 1 out of 3 RNs Plan to Scale Back Hours Within Three Years

|

At the Thursday-Friday inaugural Healthcare Workforce Summit in Southlake, AMN Healthcare unveiled the results of its 2012 survey of registered nurses.

Among the findings:

  • About 1 out of 3 said they plan to try to reduce their current workload within the next three years.  That included shifting to part-time or less demanding roles, as well as leaving nursing altogether, by retiring or seeking non-nursing jobs.
  • While 91 percent of registered nurses were satisfied with their careers, 44 percent would not select or are not sure they would select nursing as a career again.
  • Slightly less than half (40 percent) said they would not recommend or are not sure that they would recommend nursing as a career.
  • Forty percent plan to pursue further education in nursing within the next three years. A 2011 Institute of Medicine report recommending that 80 percent of nurses working in hospitals hold a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) by 2020.  Today, less than 40 percent of nurses hold BSNs.
