Local Hospitals Perform Better than National Average

|

Dallas-Fort Worth hospitals, many within this same system, have widely varying scores on patient safety, according to the annual Leapfrog Group survey.

The nonprofit quality-improvement organization ranked more than 2,600 hospitals nationally, grading them on an A-through-F scale for hospital safety and posting the results on hospitalsafetyscore.org. The group did not disclose hospitals earning a D or an F.

Local hospitals performed better than the national average. Of the 46 graded in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, 35 percent earned an “A,” 24 percent received a “B,” and 41 percent were given a “C.” Nationwide, 27 percent earned an “A,” 26 percent received a “B,” and 47 percent were given a “C.”

Leapfrog’s report was based on surveys voluntarily submitted by the hospitals, as well as 26 measures of publicly available safety data on measures such as hospital-acquired infections, inpatient falls, and preventable surgical complications. The analysis also took into account hand-washing hygiene, the quality of nursing leadership, and use of computerized physician order entry systems.

Baylor Health Care System had three As, Bs and Cs. Texas Health Resources had four As, two Bs and three Cs. HCA had four As, two Bs and three Cs.

The American Hospital Association disputed the ratings. In a statement, Nancy Foster, vice president of quality and patient safety, said, “The American Hospital Association has supported several good quality measures, but many of the measure Leapfrog uses to grade hospitals are flawed and they do not accurately portray a picture of safety efforts made by hospitals.”
