Piñatas are many things to many people, but the mass population probably wouldn’t characterize them as “cool.” Enter Paper House Piñatas. With punchy, papier-mâché cacti, unicorns, or speech bubbles reading “Dallas AF,” Lara Citlalli’s piñatas aren’t just for kids.

Growing up in Monterey, Mexico, Citlalli watched her uncle create piñatas. “Our family likes to celebrate,” Citlalli adds. When she and her husband got married in Dallas, she wanted to have something unique to celebrate. “We created these big piñatas to spell out the word “love” in Spanish,” Citlalli says. “They were a lot of work, but worth it.”

image 5After a positive reception, Citlalli decided to keep crafting and launched Paper House Piñatas in 2015. Just a few months ago, she started posting her piñata photography to Instagram, and amassed a following. “It was unexpected,” Citlalli says. “When people saw them they really fell in love with them.” Soon after she started posting, rewardStyle reached out to her to host a piñata party with Dallas bloggers, and the custom orders started rolling in.

Now that party-lovers everywhere from Aspen to California are discovering Citlalli’s modern twist on the traditional piñata, she and her helper husband are just working to keep up. But expect some fun Halloween, Christmas, and even Bachelorette-themed products in the future for photo ops, decor, and (on occasion) to wack with a stick. “People save them and don’t want to destroy them,” Citlalli adds. “But it’s so fun to break a piñata.”
