When a Dallas Cowboy shows up in a department store or a car dealership to sign autographs, he’s not doing it to keep his fingers loose. For passing out his signature, a Dallas Cowboy earns a cool $ 150 an hour. Minimum. $ 150 is the base rate; some get more.
The players’ public appearances are handled by the Cowboys’ public relations department – except for two notable instances. Requests for Tony Dorsett are referred to his personal agent in Pennsylvania (T. D. is fully prepared for superstardom). And requests for Roger Staubach are referred to his personal secretary. With good reason. The Cowboy office estimates that at least one of every two public appearance requests they receive is for Staubach. “It’s not surprising,” notes one staffer. “Roger’s appeal covers so much ground; he has the Christian appeal, he has the all-American appeal, he has the family-man appeal, he has the military appeal – and he’s the quarterback.”
After Staubach and Dorsett, the most sought after Cowboys continue along predictable lines. The solid #3 choice is the affable Harvey Martin. Followed, in no particu-lar order, by Drew Pearson, Charlie Waters, and Cliff Harris. Thomas Henderson requests are presently on the rise; Golden Richards re- quests are on the wane. And the real sleeper in the autograph sweepstakes – Efren Herrera. And what about a Bruce Huth-er or an Andy Frederick? Still $150/hr. There are no cut-rate Cowboys.
