Spark up those grills, people.

I stopped by Central Market earlier in the week and picked up a variety of North Texas BBQ sauces. Here’s what D Magazine staff had to say about them.

The BBQ sauce:

A. Bentley’s Batch 5
B. Tim’s Texas 2 Step BBQ Sauce
C. Brother’s Gold Gourmet Barbecue Sauce
D. KW’s BBQ Sauce

Tasting notes:

Bentley’s Batch 5

  • Nice, classic BBQ sauce.
  • This doesn’t taste like BBQ sauce at all. Almost too much of a bitter taste.
  • Not much to say about this one. Pretty run-of-the-mill BBQ sauce.
  • More vinegary than I like.
  • Kind of tangy, feels light.

Tim’s Texas 2 Step BBQ Sauce

  • Tastes like chili, too much cumin.
  • Strange smoked flavor. Tastes exactly like chili.
  • I like the way this one poured. Thick, like molasses. Too much chili powder for my taste, though.
  • Thicker. Has a nice tang.
  • Really sweet and distinctive, smoky.

Brother’s Gold Gourmet Barbecue Sauce

  • Nice amount of spice and vinegar.
  • Classic BBQ taste.
  • Wonderful smoked flavor. A tad too sweet but I still like it.
  • Strange smoky flavor. I hate strong smoky flavor.
  • Tastes a lot like good o’l A1.

KW’s BBQ Sauce

  • Wooooo! This is spicy. I like the tanginess.
  • Taste more like a mustard than BBQ sauce.
  • Packin’ some heat. Tangy.
  • Tastes like it’s mustard-heavy. I hate mustard.
  • Good, but doesn’t really taste like BBQ sauce. These are all solid.

Tally up:

Bentley’s Batch 5 0
Tim’s Texas 2 Step BBQ Sauce 3
Brother’s Gold Gourmet Barbecue Sauce 1
KW’s BBQ Sauce 1

The winner is:

Tim’s Texas 2 Step BBQ Sauce is the winner of this week’s blind taste test. The sauce is manufactured in Plano by Timothy Halls, chef and owner of Timothy’s Gourmet House (you can read all about him here). The sauce is sweet and smoky, it has a nice mix of brown sugar, vinegar, tomato, honey, and chili powder. Click here for a full list of where to find Tim’s Texas 2 Step BBQ Sauce.
