There’s a part of me that wishes the musical Pippin was about retired NBA small forward Scottie Pippen. There’s an even bigger part of me that thinks a musical about Michael Jordan — the bloodthirsty competitiveness, the gambling, the father issues, and the undisputed greatness are all pretty ripe subjects, dramatically speaking — is begging to be made. Unfortunately, Pippin has no visible connection to basketball or the professionals who play it, although it does boast some acrobatic flair and is by most accounts an interesting enough show.

Go see a musical that has nothing to do with Scottie Pippen, pick your poison from three concerts, or take in a gleefully creepy art exhibition at the Bath House Cultural Center.

The Christian rock band Flyleaf is playing at the Granada, the jam rock band Widespread Panic is playing at the Winspear, and the bad rock bands Seether and 3 Doors Down are playing at the Bomb Factory. This strikes me as a really grim trio of concerts, but I know a lot of otherwise sensible people who like Widespread Panic, and I’d be lying if I told you I don’t know every single word to “Kryptonite.” There’s no judgment here.

The touring Broadway production of Pippin, a bombastic musical about a medieval theater troupe guiding a young medieval prince through a coming-of-age story, is showing at the Music Hall at Fair Park. The acrobatic stunts in the show are billed as both “high-flying” and “death-defying.”

The Irrational City group exhibition at the Bath House Cultural Center sounds like a lot of skin-crawling weird fun, particularly a series of prints that reset Dante’s tour of hell in a post-apocalyptic Dallas.
