This month, the 74th class of seniors, the class of ’88, begins its reign on the Hockaday campus. It carries forward a proud tradition which began when Ela Hockadav established her private school for girls in 1913 at the comer of Swiss and Haskell in east Dallas.
In our watercolor, the class of 1987, cameras flashing, parents and friends beaming, walks proudly into the pages of historv. As the gills wend their way gracefully around the circular garden created in memory of Marguerite B. Grow, who made Latin a living language for her students for almost half a century, from 1920 to 1966, the)’ take with them the love, the pride and the best wishes of family, faculty, friends and fellow classmates.
The passing parade of senior classes carries stronger emotions than any other experience in private education. Because of small classes and skilled, dedicated teachers, unusually deep bonds of love and friendship have been formed over the veal’s. They are not easily broken. Every June, the entire campus is literally bathed in a sea of mixed emotions as the joy of success and the pride of scholastic achievement are balanced against the trauma of pairing and the interruption of cherished living patterns.
For most of this century, The Hockaday School has established, preserved and enhanced its tradition of excellence in developing the full personal potential of the thousands of young women fortunate enough to pass through its portals. The many alumnae who maintain their love for the school are one of its richest rewards. Hockaday and its graduates fill unique and lasting places in one another’s hearts.
