WHAT’S REALLY WRONG WITH THE NEWS

|

First, its editor, Bob Mong, doesn’t have the cojones to stand up for his newsroom and resign as a matter of honor. It happened on his watch and since Moroney isn’t going to do what any God-fearing Japanese top executive or samurai lord would do, it’s up to Mong to accept responsibility. He’s the commander of the troops. The troops are being decimated. His place is with them. Hell, maybe he’d even get some respect. But maybe that’s just me.

As for the other stuff that’s wrong, let’s have a look at today’s front pages of the DMN and its sorta rival, the Star-Telegram.

The DMN‘s P1 is almost all wire service. FDA birth control–Washington Post; Pluto–also WP; Lebanon/UN–LA Times. Only DMN product is Juarez killings, from Alfredo Corchado, Mexico City bureau, buyout status pending.

At the Startlegram, all five P1 stories are by the paper’s own reporters, even Pluto.

I said earlier that the DMN newsroom is killed by these heart-and-soul cuts. Maybe it’s more accurately described as zombified–the living dead.

Nice job, Belo.
