MEMO TO JEROME WEEKS: DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE

|

I’ve been struggling with this book review by Weeks. The book is Nate Blakeslee’s Tulia: Race, Cocaine and Corruption in a Small Texas Town. Read the review and tell me if it makes sense. Because to me, it looks like Weeks says the book is bad because it defends the criminal justice system that sent innocent people (in Weeks’ view) to jail. But he also says the book is great because it exposes the injustices that sent innocent people (again, in Weeks’ view) to jail. Even more confusing, Weeks at one point in his review says the book was written by Tom Coleman, the supposedly racist cop whose undercover work put all those people in jail. It’s a muddled review. I’ve read it three times. Still don’t understand it.

But one thing I do understand is that Weeks thinks Coleman is a bad guy and a racist. That’s a shame. Because it isn’t true. I invite him to read our fine story about Coleman, published in April. It’s called “Tom Coleman is Not the Biggest Racist in America.”
