Ten Things That Inspire Breck Woolsey and Charles Taylor

Breck Woolsey and Charles Taylor are masters of creating a subtle, modern glamor. In the spaces they craft  through their design firm Breckinridge Taylor, high-gloss lacquered walls and Brutalist brass sconces mingle harmoniously with texture-heavy organic elements to create warm, inspired rooms that avoid even a trace of pretension.

The duo’s aesthetic also drives the collection they design for Mecox, with locally-crafted tables, desks, and credenzas all sporting their go-to roster of earthy meets glam materials (think burled woods, parchment, Lucite, goatskin…).

I popped into Breckinridge Taylor’s Bonita Avenue studio last week to see what they were up to and left coveting pretty much every single one of their custom pieces. (They’re that good.) Sadly, I couldn’t swing taking home a particularly fetching Lucite and grasscloth desk, so to compensate, I hit up the designers for some of their inspirations, and happily they obliged.

So without further ado, herewith ten things that have Breck and Charles’ attention.

Oh, and for the record, I’m still dreaming about that desk…

  • 1. Swan Italy Furniture — Pretty much anything designed in/originating from Italy, old or new.
  • 2. Antiqued copper details on everything.
  • 3. Geometry — It’s totally inspiring…nerd alert.
  • 4. We can’t work without music — Pandora is essential in that it turns you onto new music and keeps your playlist fresh.
  • 4. Pratt&Lambert paints — They have the best colors.
  • 5. Ado Chale furniture — We love the organic mix of sculptural bases with brass tops.
  • 6. Franz Kline art — Cool, minimalist…amazing graphic movement.
  • 7. Chahan Interior design & showrooms — The whole thing is perfectly curated.
  • 8. Marbleized leather — Fun to use as applications and infinite colors and patterns…
  • 9. Robert Crowder wallpaper — Beautiful for background use…it’s art.
