Leading Off (8/15/16)

Murder suspect turns himself in; Rangers, Cowboys, and FC Dallas news; Goff's is demolished; and laser tag.

Suspect in Homicide Turns Himself In. According to a police affidavit, there was a “verbal altercation” outside a southern Dallas convenience store on Friday night that led to 23-year-old Jimmy Davis being shot several times. On Saturday, accompanied by his parents, Marque Townsend, 20, surrendered to police.

Rangers Opt For New Stadium Instead of $80 Million Sun Shade. It sounds like a bad deal, since the new stadium is going to cost around $1 billion. But from reading this, it sounds like the (much) cheaper option would have only lowered the temperature at the ballpark by a few degrees, it would have taken three years to install, and it probably would have looked pretty janky. But I’m not on the hook for the money, so maybe it would have been fine.

Goff’s Hamburgers Demolished After Fire. A three-alarm fire did most of the destruction on Friday, the hottest day of the year so far. Demolition crews did the rest of the work on Saturday, tearing down what was left of the University Park burger joint.

The Guy Who Invented Laser Tag Brings It To iPhones. Dallas inventor George Carter III’s idea seems pretty solid: app that allows play anywhere using phones and earbuds as the gun, scoring system, and everything else. The name — Tzuum, pronounced “zoom,” an allusion Sun Tzu and The Art of War — is maybe a bit too clever.

Rookie QB Dak Prescott Looks Good In First Game. Sure, it was only preseason, and, sure, it was against the Rams. But going 10 for 12 for 139 yards and two TDs is pretty OK.

FC Dallas Stays Unbeaten at Home, Atop MLS Standings. It was a wild second half, with four goals and a few more near misses, but FCD left with a 2-2 draw with Sporting KC. Maxi Urruti leveled the match and finished off the scoring with a bicycle kick (his second on the season) off a rebound.
