If you’re one of the few people who didn’t post a grainy pic of last night’s red-tinted, dust-distorted, eclipse on one of your various social media platforms last night, thank you. Instagram was nearly ruined in a single evening. Although, I have to say, this pic snapped by metal DJ and painter Joey Seeman in front of Single Wide last night, is not bad at all.
Tonight marks the beginning of a nearly month-long run of Beauty and the Beast at the Winspear. D Magazine intern Kristen Taylor interviewed the star of the show, Hilary Maiberger, who admitted that it was always her dream to play Belle:
Belle was always my favorite Disney princess growing up. I remember seeing the show when I was ten years old, and leaning over to my mom, saying, “Mom, I want to be Belle one day!” It’s always had a special place in my heart—the film and the character. It’s truly a dream come true.
Maiberger goes on to commend Belle for her independence, and it is true that the character’s bookworm tendencies and lack of obvious romantic longing put her in stark contrast to other princesses. Read the rest of the interview here.
There is at least one other story that Disney adapted for the big screen playing this evening, though it’s far different, and the feminism of its central character more obvious. That would be Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita, and it’s at the Music Hall at Fair Park this evening. Consider an early dinner at Meridian Room, followed by a quick walk across the street in time for the show. I did that a few weeks ago before a dance performance at the Margo Jones and it was lovely, even if the date was a bust.
Finally, one of the premier British dance icons of the 80s, the Pet Shop Boys, are at the Majestic Theatre, which is an appropriately reverent setting for such an event. I already designated this as one of the best concerts of the week, but allow me to reiterate it here. The group had a considerable impact on Dallas in their heyday, as they were certainly on rotation at the Starck Club. Consider going if you were part of that storied scene, as you never know who you might run into.
