Tonight, the Granada Theater travels back to the ’80s with cover bands The Rich Girls and Le Cure. The excellent tribute to Hall & Oates goes on at 9 p.m., followed by the “Friday I’m In Love” folks. General admission is just $12, which is a small price to pay for the fizzy rush of happiness I get when I hear the opening chords of “Maneater.” Of course, there’s always Sundown next door for drinks and a meal. Nancy Nichols recently paid a visit to nearby HG Sply Co., and approved of both the Paleo-inspired dishes and the burger.
Also this evening, it’s Candleroom’s 10th birthday. The lounge celebrates the aging process by looking even better than the day they were born, thanks to a swanky new redesign. If you’d like to go be a fancy person, RSVP to [email protected].
Meanwhile, country music fans will flock to Gexa Energy Pavilion for the first day of the big music fest Country Fair. Things get started around 4:30 p.m. Tonight’s headliner is Pat Green, and he’s supported by the likes of Roger Creager and Montgomery Gentry. Now, Gexa is in Fair Park. Ladies. If you really love Pat Green that much, please arm yourselves with mace, a rape whistle, a GPS tracker, a group buddy system, something. I know the Dallas PD caught a “person of interest” in the case of the serial rapist who’s attacked an unbelievable nine (nine!) women since late June, but you never know. Be careful, stay alert, spend the extra money on parking so you don’t have to walk too far to your car late at night.
Saturday
Untapped, the semi-local music-and-brew-fest, is here. Last year, tickets sold so quickly that organizers had to move it from The Common Table in Uptown to Trinity Groves. This year, it seemed safe to just anticipate a massive crowd showing up for the more than 200 beers and a concert featuring some big names in indie music. Of the headlining acts, Cults is my personal favorite. Listen to “Go Outside,” if you haven’t already. Brings back mixed memories for me. However, you can also catch Delta Spirit and Freelance Whales. VIP tickets are sold out, but you can still get the concert + beer tickets online.
Also on Saturday, Irish Pub Trinity Hall hosts a homecoming party for Haley O’Sullivan, the Dallas native who was recently named the Rose of Tralee. The annual “lovely and fair” festival, held in Ireland, is a a big deal. Stop by for a pint starting around 3 p.m., and toast to her continued success. Tim Rogers also informs me that this celebration perfectly coincides with the Notre Dame vs. Michigan game. Must be fate.
Sunday
Speaking of football games, the Dallas Cowboys play the New York Giants on Sunday. Would it be an understatement to say that many people are excited about the beginning of the NFL regular season? True to form, the Granada hosts a watch party complete with big HD screens, drink specials, and nachos. Pour House on Davis St. kills a couple of birds by hosting their own watch party that doubles as a one year anniversary cookout. The bar has lots of TVs along with specials on burgers, brats, and beer. Show up as early as 3 p.m.
Uptown Players’ Pride Performing Arts Festival continues at the Kalita Humphreys Theater this weekend, and of special note is a staged reading of Mike Barlett’s play, Cock, on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.. The plot involves a gay man who breaks up with his boyfriend and accidentally falls in love with a woman. It’s presented by Second Thought Theatre, which is useful to note because the theater will perform a full version of the play to kick off their new season in January. Think of this as a preview.
