High-Pile Rugs Are Having a Moment–Here’s How to Care for Them

Knowing a bit of background about your rug can help you determine the proper course of care to keep it looking in tiptoe—er, tiptop—shape. Abrash Rugs owner Fara Kayone explains that traditional hand-knotted styles are often very forgiving, as they are made using non-treated wool with “extremely high lanolin content that will make it resistant to stains,” she says.

For regular care of deep-pile rugs like the shaggy styles pictured, Kayone recommends sweeping in the direction of the pile, with an occasional pass of a brushless vacuum as needed. If hiring a professional rug cleaner, make sure he or she has the appropriate equipment to treat deep-pile rugs. And in case of accidental spills or stains, avoid the urge to rub the spot with cleaner. Instead, Kayone recommends removing any remaining solids, diluting the spot with cold or carbonated water, then dabbing dry with a towel, repeating as needed.
