Highlight Truck of the Week: Nammi Vietnamese Food Truck

Teena Nguyen and Gary Torres, two previous architects, first rolled Nammi in May 2011 at the Deep Ellum Outdoor Market with the goal to introduce the Vietnamese banh mi to a much larger Dallas audience.  Even though we have seen almost 160 total food trucks/trailers roll in Dallas/Ft. Worth, and about 100 still rolling, Nammi quickly mastered what I believe to be keys to success for food trucks: consistently great food with a unique concept, hard work (food trucks must serve at least 8 services per week for success), and friendly owners behind the window who care about their product.  Nammi started rolling their second truck in March 2012.  The same team also runs Coolhaus and started it up in April 2012.

Most recently (September 21, 2013), Nguyen and Torres started up nammiTK, a brick ‘n’ mortar operation within the Valley View Center at Midtown.  You can get to it at the entrance to the AMC movie theater off of Preston Rd.  They consider the location a Test Kitchen (and thus the nammiTK name) to experiment with new menu items.

nammiTK has an expanded menu over the food truck’s standard banh mi and ricebowl offerings.  If you are new to Nammi, start with an asian bbq pork banh mi and wash it down with a basil mint lemonade.

You can typically find one of Nammi’s two food trucks at Klyde Warren Park, the Arts District, or roaming to various events.  Check the Nammi website for the Tuesday-Sunday hours at nammiTK.

In other news, the Fly-By Food Truck park near Love Field has shut down and is looking for a new location.  Virtually every food truck/trailer is looking for help.  In particular, Trailercakes needs a combo Airstream driver/baker.  On Tuesday, Rock’n’Tacos and ParrotIcce will be serving up freebies while they last at Sprouts Henderson to highlight a new movie coming out called “Kill Machete”.  Wednesday is my favorite night at Sigel’s/Greenville with multiple of Dallas’ best food trucks serving.

Now, for this week’s schedule.  Remember to always check Twitter and Facebook, as bad weather does blow in and trucks cancel their plans.
