I hope everyone is in good health after yesterday’s storms. I didn’t take the threat very seriously, until the skyline disappeared and the office floor began to move. As we huddled in the glass-filled lobby (surely the best hiding spot for a potential tornado), the atmosphere of waiting it out was an odd reminder of the time my elementary school caught fire. I was in the fifth grade, and for some reason, we all had a grand time of it, joking with plenty of gallows humor in the recess area and practice fields. When the fire department arrived, the entire student body, grades K-5, booed. Back to work:
Friday
You could start your weekend off with a couple of noteworthy concerts, as Sean Lennon will be at Club Dada, and the chart-crushing country act Lady Antebellum will appear at Gexa.
Lennon is of course, the famous son of Yoko Ono and that “one guy with the glasses according to our event listing,” and he’ll be playing with his mouthful of a band, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger. The pop duo features Lennon equally billed with model Charlotte Kemp Muhl. Muhl is a model as well as a musician and these two basically are just spoiled with talent. I saw Lennon play a supporting role in mother Yoko’s band a few years ago, and he was excellent.
Saturday
It still feels fairly new, but yes, the Homegrown Music and Art Festival is now in its 5th year. Some of the area’s most reliable standby acts will perform, along with rising local stars such as Sam Lao. And even if you don’t plan on attending, note that Main Street will actually be closed off this year.
If you prefer your park to be a more serene setting than a rock and rap concert, consider the new film series at Klyde Warren, which launched last weekend. This week’s screening features the flawless onscreen chemistry of Bogart and Bacall in The Big Sleep, and I may just sneak away from Homegrown to take a moment for that. DMN critic Chris Vognar will give remarks before the film.
There are a few significant exhibitions closing around town this weekend, so this is your last chance to catch them before they’re gone for good. There’s the Kelli Vance show at Chris Worley, Geoff Hippenstiel at Holly Johnson, and the well-received David Bates dual retrospective, at both the Nasher and the Fort Worth Modern. Also this week, we received the rare news that an exhibition was actually extended. That would be the Jesús Moroles show at Photographs Do Not Bend. It will remain open through the end of May.

Last but certainly not least, Happy Mother’s Day. If you’re lucky enough to see mom this weekend, there’s only one thing to do for her on this delicate occasion: Take her to brunch.
