For more than 45 years, Dr. Howard C. “Butch” Derrick, III has served patients throughout North Texas by providing excellence in general surgery and patient care. He is a pioneer of laparoscopic surgery and has been involved in several minimally invasive surgical “firsts.” He was the first surgeon to perform a laparoscopic cholecystectomy at Baylor University Medical Center Dallas. Dr. Derrick started the laparoscopic donor nephrectomy program at BUMC Dallas, where he was the first to perform the surgery and was involved in the first 500 procedures.
As the field of surgery is constantly changing, Dr. Derrick and his partners at the Surgical Institute of Plano enjoy remaining at the forefront of general surgery. “I am committed to providing high-quality patient care that incorporates state-of-the-art technology and commitment to excellence,” he says. Leadership in medicine is Dr. Derrick’s passion. He was voted president of the medical staff at BUMC Dallas and later at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Plano. He helped launch Baylor Scott & White-Plano and credentialed all initial physicians on staff. He served as chief of surgery for Baylor Scott & White-Plano and was on the board of directors of the HealthTexas Provider Network.
Named a D Magazine Best Doctor 16 times, he hails from a long line of physicians and has two sons, Dustin and Chase, who are local plastic surgeons. “My father and grandfather were physicians, so I become one, too,” he recalls. “I couldn’t have done this without the support of my wife of 42 years, Suzette, who has been my rock. I enjoy going to work and caring for my patients every day.”
