The Modern Moloch

Moloch was an ancient god that derived its powers from the sacrifice of children.

Early in the 20th century, streets still belonged to people.  They were part of the public realm, the facilitating conduit of social and economic exchange.  Until, they were not and they were turned entirely over to the conveyance of cars at increasingly high speeds and volumes.  Roman Mars of 99% invisible traces the history of the fight over who streets belonged to, how the cars came to dominate, and the origination of the term ‘jaywalking’ as not only an insult but a law.  Listen to his podcast here.
